| Bob Bogle, Ventures Lead Guitarist Dead At 75 |
|
| My dream of being a real lead guitarist was made possible by Bob Bogle of the Ventures. Yeah, me and a hundred thousand others! Walk don't Run, Perfidia and Caravan probably got me my first paid club gig. In the very early sixties, lead players were scarce in central Illinois. More plus video |

| Kenny Rankin Passes Away From Cancer |
|
| A 2am radio news break announced the death of Kenny. I paused to
remember my brush with this great talent. It was late '75 I think. I was ready to
go on stage, the last act at 'Hoot Night', The Backdoor at San Diego State
University. Walt, the guy who ran the show, said a friend had dropped by and
asked if could he go next. I agreed. "He has no guitar. Can he use your's?"
Very protective of my guitars, I never lend them to anyone... but felt compelled
to agree once more.
He introduced 'Renny Pumpkin' who performed a few songs, closing with
'Blackbird'... More plus video |

| Gary Strater, Renowned Bassist, Passes Away |
|
| I was not a close friend of
Gary, much as I'd like to have been. That's why I was so taken by his
kindness and concern. He treated me as if I were. Oh, and not just me.
Gary was a friend to all, giving of his time, talent and experience on
the bass, on songwriting, producing and life. He is dearly missed by
many around here. Read |

| George
Harrison Plays His Last Set At 58 |
|
| I can't say much about
George and the Beatles that you haven's already heard. He was one of
the best guitarists of popular music history. There are those that
play incredibly fast with every picking and fingering technique known.
Who's the best is an absurd question. I know George played exactly the
right background and solos in each and every song. No other guitarist
could have created the Beatle sound. Read |

| Opening Two Nights
For Steve Goodman |
|
| The shows with Steve Goodman
not for thousands but a couple hundred. The room was perfect for
acoustic players with only enough amplification to move sound to the
rear. Meeting Steve and experiencing his zest for music and life left
it's mark on me. It was all due to Rich Warren. Remember that debt you
said you owed when I moved you to Chicago in my '66 Dodge van? It's
paid twice over! Thanks, Rich. Read |
